I found a pony locally, went to check him out, and he's starving.
I'm making arrangements to take him home, but have never rehabbed a horse before. I would guess this guy is a 3 at the VERY most, probably less.
I have not agreed to buy him, rather am taking him on a "trial" basis. I have no idea of the pony's personality, or if he's suitable for what I need/want. But I have to get him out of where he is. We didn't see any hay anywhere, except the flake of alfalfa that had just been put in front of him. Yes, I said alfalfa, very nice, very RICH looking hay.
They can't remember when he was wormed last, husband said at least 2 years, wife said 6 months to a year. They say he's about 4. I didn't even take the time to look at his teeth.
Worming him will be my first step, and I have timothy at home. The husband indicated that he gets about 1/3 t o1/2 of a bale daily, but that's pure bullshit. He also claims that this pony "just gets like this" every winter, but is totally fine in the summer. FFS...
I may be getting myself in over my head, but I can't let him stay in the situation he's in.
Thanks for any help/suggestions. I will put up pictures as soon as I can.
Let's Get to It

Take a deeep cleansing breath. Twice. Three times:)
ReplyDeleteWhat's his condition, on the body scale, spoken as a true ex-AC officer. Pictures? Does he have water? Drinking? (Hey, thanks for the picture tip, worked like a charm). If he's emaciated, and weak, and slow temp. & resp. & "dull" eyed, yes move him as quick as you can. But take care of BB's remains first, is your problem, right? If pony's bright-eyed, cheerful and eating etc. Don't stress yourself too hard. Well, try not to anyway! Ponies are incredibly tough little critters, eh?
You do great, take care of yourself too!
Good luck, Merry Christmas Eve:)
